INTERNATIONAL DRIVING LICENSE
Conversion of Foreign Driving License to Malaysian Competent Driving License (CDL)
a) Foreign driving
license holders from certain countries can apply to convert theirs to a Malaysia
Competent Driving License automatically. These foreign drivers can drive in
Malaysia as long as their domestic drivers license is still valid and they need
to carry an English or Malay translation of their license. The list of countries
that is accepted for conversion changes frequently and is subject to amendments
based on confirmation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The currents list as

countries that are members of the Geneva Convention Agreement 1949 and 1968 can
drive in Malaysia as long their domestic drivers license is still valid and
carry an English or Malay translation of their license . The member countries

Foreigners possessing
domestic driver license as the above (b) can apply for a Malaysian Driver
License to the DG of the RTD. The DG can use his discretion on a case-to-case
basis to allow for the conversion without any examination or exercise certain
restriction.
Documents that are
required are as follows:

A copy of certified
domestic driving license;

Letter of translation (English or Malay) by the
foreign embassy/consulate that issued the license

INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT
(IDP)
Malaysian driver who wants
to drive in foreign countries are advised to obtain an International Driving
Permit.
Applications can also be
made in The Malaysian Automobile Association.
Applicants need to furnish
the following documents:

Original Domestic
Driving License and a photocopy of license which is still valid for one year

Original Identity Card
and a photocopy;
-
2 passport sized
photographs
-
JPJ L1 Form
-
Payment of RM150.00 for
a year
